THE METROPOLITAN COUNCIL
The Metropolitan Council is the executive body of the Italo-Greek Orthodox Holy Metropolitan Archdiocese of the Americas and Canada. The Council is comprised of the Metropolitan as Chairman and President, the Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia, the Chancellor, the president of the College of Consultors, the president of the Presbyteral Council, the president of the Diaconal Council, the president of the Monastic Council, the Chief Operating Officer of the Archdiocese, the president of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council, the president of the Archdiocesan Finance Council, the Archdiocesan Secretary, the Archdiocesan Treasurer, the Comptroller, the Archdiocesan General Counsel, the Chief Canon Lawyer, and six members of the laity. The scope of responsibility of the Metropolitan Council is defined by the Constitution of the Italo-Greek Byzantine Orthodox Church in the Americas and Canada.
The purpose of the Council is to advise the Metropolitan on all matters which pertain to the temporal and material affairs of the Archdiocese. Also, in certain instances, the Metropolitan is prohibited from taking certain actions without the prior consent and approval of the Metropolitan Council. These include entering into contracts; abandoning, selling, or leasing Archdiocesan property; encumbering the Archdiocese financially or legally; or entering into any transaction or activity that is not consistent with the Church's divine mission and purpose.
